The Audio Guides Section from Davis Museum Barcelona

A sound map: listen what happens inside these museums

What/who inspired the work?
YoKo Ono's sound pieces were inspired by the Fluxus movement and the everyday sounds of daily life. Many Fluxus artists, including Ono, were interested in exploring the intersection of art and everyday life, and often used sounds and other found objects in their works. Ono's sound pieces often featured recordings of mundane or seemingly insignificant sounds, such as footsteps or birds singing, as a way to draw attention to the beauty and complexity of the world around us.

What do you hope its viewers will feel/think?
It is my hope that viewers will understand The Audio Guides Section From Davis Museum Barcelona as an auditory map, providing a unique opportunity to engage with the sounds of the various museums included in Davis Museum's project. These recordings, which offer a duration ranging from 10 to 60 minutes, allow for an alternative perspective on the museums, drawing attention to the everyday sounds that are often overlooked in traditional museum experiences. While art museums typically direct our visual attention and minimize our sense of hearing, except when providing audio guides to explain specific works of art, The Audio Guides Section From Davis Museum seeks to challenge this conventional approach by revealing the subtle sound atmospheres that go unnoticed by visitors and denying its didactic character.

Why did you choose the medium, subject matter, style?
I chose to use my mobile phone to record the sounds within the museums as I visited them. These digital recordings are hosted on Mixcloud in an attempt to make them viral and available to people anywhere in the world at any time. These sound pieces are experimental and spontaneous in nature, and in contrast to "The Videoexhibition Setion," they are never edited. The use of this medium, subject matter, and style was intended to create an immersive and authentic audio experience for listeners, capturing the spontaneous and fleeting sounds of the museum environment.
